Todd King

  • You Have to be Who You Are to Know Who You Are

It’s like that thing where when you come out, you worry less about people questioning your sexuality and more about missing RuPaul’s Drag Race. Growing up gay, you live a life of secrecy. You try your best to act masculine and close your eyes to all the things that could make you happy. When you finally embrace who you are and forget every dumb reason you had for keeping yourself down, you finally know how it feels to be Real.

After a brief stint in Zoology that he’d rather not talk about, Todd King graduated with a BFA in graphic design from Miami University in 2008. Since then he’s been with the advertising agency Leo Burnett Worldwide—transferring to their Department of Design in 2012. A lot of Todd’s personal work deals with the struggles of growing up queer and insecure, but in a way that shines a light on a hopeful present and future. He has a strong sense of whimsy, little patience for the pretentious, and an affinity for the adorable. In his free time, Todd oversees design and volunteers for acre (Artists’ Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions), a non-profit artists’ residency program based in Chicago. He’s not sure where the rest of his time goes, but he’s not too worried about it. Todd used to play with My Little Ponies as a child and hasn’t ever told anyone about it until just now.
