I submitted this work to typeforce 2011 with the hope that makers, crafters and especially knitters, would be inspired to incorporate typography in their own work. The inclusion of this medium in typeforce shows that knitting and other craft based art forms are valued and viable options for expression. I am honored to have been in the company of some of Chicago’s most talented designers, artists, and emerging typographic allstars.
kNWA (knittaz with attitude)
kNWA is a one woman yarn bombing crew that re-contextualizes hip hop lyrics into phrases that resonate with tough-as-needles knitters. The project unites and empowers knitters to come out of their living rooms and bring their knitting to the streets.
Caroline Corboy is a graphic designer, artist, horticultural enthusiast and maker of things. As a child she idolized the self-sustaining pioneer lifestyle of her fictional heroes and made it a priority to create things for herself, with her own hands. A penchant for stitching and knitting—her work consistently has a quality which recalls history and reflects the handmade. In 2011 she earned a bfa in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Most recently she has spearheaded the resurgence of flannel fanny packs in the Urbana-Champaign area.
